Q10323 - HOWTO: Configuring Calendar, Contact, Task and Notes synchronisation on your Windows Mobile device

MDaemon Pro version 11 onwards supports the use of a free SyncML client called Funambol which can be used to synchronise Calendar, Contact, Task and Notes data between a Windows Mobile device and your MDaemon mailbox.

In order for Funambol to successfully access MDaemon the WorldClient webmail interface needs to be available from the Internet. This is achieved by creating a port forward on your firewall or router so that incoming traffic from the Internet on the port WorldClient runs on is routed to the MDaemon machine. By default WorldClient runs on port 3000 (and 443 over SSL), but you can confirm the port at Setup -> Web & SyncML Services -> Web Server -> Run WorldClient server using this TCP port.

The steps required to configure port forwarding on most firewalls and routers are covered at http://www.portforward.com

Installing Funambol Client on a Windows Mobile Handset:

To download the Funambol client onto your handset visit the appropriate URL via the Internet Explorer on the Mobile device:

Pocket PC Version :- http://download.forge.objectweb.org/sync4j/funambol-pocketpc-sync-client-8.0.4.cab
SmartPhone Version :- http://download.forge.objectweb.org/sync4j/funambol-smartphone-sync-client-8.0.4.cab

(If you try to install the wrong version you will get an error during installation and should try the other version)

Choose 'Save'...

Save the file to the local file system...

Go to Start -> Programs -> File Explorer and double click on the Funambol installer...

In Server Location type the external URL you use to access WorldClient along with /MDSyncML.DLL as follows, and then add your account username and password:

http://mail.mydomain.com:3000/MDSyncML.DLL

(The above is an example URL and on your mobile device it should reflect the URL specific to your installation)

Before we can synchronise the data we must first configure the SyncML data settings...

choose Menu -> Settings...

Select the Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes items (Email and Briefcase SyncML items are not supported by MDaemon) and choose Sync Method...

Change the 'Initiate sync using' option to 'Scheduled synchronisation' and choose a required interval (every 15 minutes in this example). Choose 'Save' to commit the changes...

Choose Menu -> Advanced...

Edit the Remote name fields to match the below, there are no other changes needed. Choose 'Save' then 'Save' again to return to the main Funambol window...

You can now select 'Sync all' to synchronise the objects...

If successful the items being synchronised will be shown and then the time and date of the last successful sync...

If you quit the Funambol application you can re launch it through the Programs window...

Resolving Connectivity / Installation Issues:

1. If you encounter problems synchronising a particular folder the \MDaemon\Logs\SyncML-YYYYMMDD.log should help identify the cause of the problem. No log information appearing in this log file will indicate a connectivity problem on the Windows Mobile device and you should initially ensure that the WorldClient webmail interface is definately accessible from the Internet.

2. Funambol synchronises Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes data held in WorldClient. If you use Outlook Connector then this WorldClient data mirrors the corresponding Outlook based data. However, standard POP3 and IMAP clients do not store their Calendar, Contacts and Tasks information in MDaemon and what gets synchronised using SyncML via WorldClient will not reflect your local Outlook data.
